JOAN BIELSKI SCHOLARSHIP – 1st year mature age women students commencing their first degree

The GW-NSW Education Trust invites applications for this scholarship every three years from women aged 35 years and over at the time of application, who have been accepted into the first year of their first university degree at any university listed on the Australian Universities’ List in NSW or the ACT, and can demonstrate hardship. Candidates must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Long time GW-NSW member, Joan Bielski AO, was a leading Australian feminist who left school at fourteen and only after service in the WAAF was she able to attend university as a returned service woman. Her wish was to enable other women who could not attend university after school, to receive this ‘second chance’ to attend university and she left a generous bequest to achieve this. Donations from her family and friends and members of GW-NSW completed the funding.

Value: $12,000 per annum for up to three years subject to satisfactory academic achievement.

Eligibility:

· A woman aged 35 years or over at the time of applying

· Undergraduate student in her first year of full-time study or equivalent at any university listed on the Australian Universities’ list with campuses in NSW or Canberra

· Has experienced hardship, and has a valid reason for not commencing university study earlier.

· Must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency in Australia.
